On our recent family escape to Pembrokeshire we spent a morning exploring Pembroke Castle. I'm a massive history lover, so anything like this, I'm all over it!
This magnificent Castle was built in around 1093, over a prehistoric cavern called The Wogan, and is famous for being the home of William Marshall, 1st Earl of Pembroke, and the birthplace of Henry the Seventh, founder of the Tudor dynasty. It was fascinating to explore exhibitions, towers and turrets, and enjoy the incredible views from the battlements.
The cavernous Wogan beneath the castle is a natural wonder with its own ancient history, which is currently being excavated and examined by archaeologists. Oli was fascinated by the Dungeon Tower and the long, winding tunnels (she's very much drawn the the macabre!) and enjoyed climbing the 100 steps to the top of the Great Keep - we didn't enjoy the climb as such, but the views from the top were definitely worth it.
There are free guided tours several times a day, and events take place throughout the year. Entry to Pembroke Castle starts from £10 for adults and £7 for children. Under 3's go free, and it's a fascinating family day out in South Wales.
